Differences Between Powder Brows & Microblading

Differences Between Powder Brows & Microblading

More than likely, if you are looking into cosmetic treatments for shaping and enhancing your eyebrows, you have probably come across either power brows and/or microblading. There are many differences between these two procedures – and they have to do with the way these methods are performed and the final look. If you’re unsure which method is best for you we welcome you to book a complimentary consultation with us, or read this article for some insight…or better yet, do both!

What is Microblading?

Microblading, a form of cosmetic tattooing, is a technique used to create the look of realistic hair strokes by implanting pigment beneath the skin. Microblading can help to add density to existing eyebrow hair or create a completely natural-looking set of eyebrows for those who experience partial or complete hair loss.

What are Powder Brows?

Power Brows (aka Ombre Brows), are perfect for adding the soft, medium, or bold shading to the brow area. This technique can help to create a fuller, defined shape that mimics the look of makeup. This service is a great option for those who have extremely oily skin and can be used to color-correct or cover up previous brow tattooing. The eyebrow shape, color, and intensity are fully customized to each individual client

Microblading vs. Powder Brows

1. Mode of application

Microblading: pigment is scratched into the skin using a hand tool with a blade made from tiny needles in fine, short strokes resembling hair, to enhance the appearance of the eyebrows. Your brow shape is created by your artist dipping the microblade into a pigment and creating your brow, one stroke at a time!

Powder Brows: uses an ultra-fine tattoo needle and a Permanent Makeup (PMU) Device to deliver pigment to the skin. Powder Brows are sometimes referred to or called “Ombre Brows.” Powder Brows result in a look most like makeup powder, hence the name “Powder Brows.”

2. Healing Time

Microblading: because this procedure is more invasive to the skin, expect the initial stages of healing to happen over 7-10 days.

Powder Brow: recovery occurs in a shorter period of about 5 days because, unlike microblading, the pigment is not implanted into the skin.

3. Personal Skin Type

Microblading depends on the applied “hair strokes” and the skin’s ability to heal. It’s good to note that for oilier skin types, treatment will result in more ‘feathered’ appearing hair strokes.

Powder Brows are best if you have oily or more ‘acne-prone’ skin. Although your “hair strokes” will heal sufficiently in your skin, strokes’ ‘crispness’ cannot be predicted or guaranteed.

4. Your Desired Outcome.

Microblading is best for you if you’re wanting to have more fine, realistic, and natural hair strokes.’

Powder Brows are for you if you prefer a more defined brow. The outcome of this procedure resembles a brow that is perfectly filled in with “powder.”

5. The Longevity of Your Results.

Microblading typically lasts about 9 months if you’ve completed only one session or 18-36 months if you’ve completed 2+ sessions. Just keep in mind that you will need an annual touchup to maintain the crispness of your “hair strokes.”

Power Brows typically last 9-12 months. This is because the pigment is not implanted as deeply into the epidermis (skin). With Powder Brows, expect to schedule a yearly touchup session when you find yourself filling in your brows again.
